Rakesh Vasant’s first foray into his long and successful engineering career actually came during childhood. Unable to see well around his hometown in India, he turned his school lunchbox into a portable light. Vasant went on to earn his undergraduate degree at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. After a short stint as a production engineer in India, he relocated to the U.S. where he earned a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering from Auburn University in 1991. At this same time Benz was looking for someone with precisely Vasant’s combination of education, skills and small company experience. And the long career officially began.
Over the years he has successfully managed many behind-the-scenes infrastructure, utilities and automation tasks that serve as the backbone of the Benz facility. Of particular note, with his expertise in project management, process design, blank machining production, and process control & automation for chemical processes, Vasant has streamlined plant maintenance; designed, installed and commissioned various chemical processes; and implemented several plant automation projects. Ever one to learn, Vasant has also achieved the Green Building Council’s LEED, AP credentials; Six Sigma Black Belt credentials; and his MBA.
When not hard at work Vasant enjoys Dan Brown books and sci-fi movies, visiting theme parks, riding roller coasters, and long-distance biking and mountain climbing.
