Patrick H. Benz was awarded a Doctorate in Organic Chemistry in 1976. His graduate work encompassed classical Organic Chemistry (Carbon-ion rearrangements and structure proof) and Biochemistry (protein structure and kinetics). Since 1976 his research focus has been in Contact Lens materials, both monomer raw materials and polymers. Dr. Benz founded Benz Research & Development (BRD) Corporation in 1980.
Dr. Benz designed and developed the process and equipment responsible for the manufacture of monomer materials used in 95% of all soft lenses made in the United States. He has developed polymer materials (blanks) that are sold worldwide. Dr. Benz is the inventor of soft lens polymers (Glycerolmethacrylate Hydroxy ethyl methacrylate copolymers - GMA/2-Hema copolymers) that is unique in its ability to retain water during wear.
